The Healing Power of Nature

April 21, 2020

As we continue to feel the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic and navigate through our lives in a completely different way than we have ever known, we do our best to remain optimistic and remind ourselves that we will prosper again soon. The dramatic impact this has caused in our families, communities and our lifestyle as we once knew it, often feels overwhelming. While it will take time, we will move forward and be able to enjoy many of things we used to, and perhaps even find new hobbies and things to enjoy.  In the meantime, it is important to appreciate the simple parts of our lives, and the natural world around us.  Perhaps, nature is the one area where we can find complete calm during this storm as there is definitely something relaxing about being in nature.

Here in Costa Rica, Eco-therapy has long been cherished, by both locals and tourists, and is associated with long and healthy living.  The benefits of Eco-therapy and the healing power of nature have shown to reduce stress, uncertainty and anger. An ample amount of research has proven that people who live close to open green spaces are healthier and live longer.  Well, there is certainly no shortage of open green spaces here! That would explain why Costa Rica is home to one of the planet’s blue zones and has a healthy elderly population.

Accounting for more than 5% of the world’s biodiversity, Costa Rica is ranked in the top 20 countries with the highest amount of biodiversity worldwide, making it the perfect place to get in touch with nature and re-charge! Costa Rica is also home to more than 500,000 wildlife species, twelve different climate zones (all found within a short distance from one another!) 5 active volcanoes, natural hot springs, hundreds of breathtaking waterfalls and some of the prettiest beaches in the world.  Costa Rica also has wetlands and coral reefs, and a total marine surface that is ten times bigger than the land surface. Surrounded by all of this, how could you not feel good in this beautiful country?

At Villa Perezoso we are privileged to be in a prime location, just a few minutes on foot to many of Manuel Antonio’s best shops, cafés, bars and restaurants, yet situated right in the heart of the Manuel Antonio rain forest. Our back patio and pool area, as well as upper viewing deck and Jacuzzi offer some of the best wildlife observing opportunities that exist in Manuel Antonio.  There is no need to ever leave the villa to enjoy visits from three of the four total primate species present in Costa Rica. The endangered white-faced capuchin monkey, the squirrel and the howler monkey pay frequent visits to guests of Villa Perezoso. What could be more special than observing this level of nature in their natural habitat right from your villa balcony or swimming pool? For those who haven’t experienced it, there is nothing quite like listening to the deep guttural calls of the howler monkey echoing through the forest. Then, of course, there are the toucans, scarlet macaws, and sloths that are impossible not to be energized by!

Just 5 minutes away from Villa Perezoso, we have the famous Manuel Antonio National Park, where many of Costa Rica’s exotic flora and fauna live.  The park is renowned for its vast diversity of tropical plants and wildlife as well as meandering jungle and beachfront hiking trails.  Set against a backdrop of paradisaical beaches, a walk on one of the trails promises to captivate your senses. Not in vain, the Manuel Antonio National Park is the protected area of the country that receives the largest number of national and international tourists annually.  The magic of the beach and the greenery of the forest mixed with the buzz of exotic animals all come together in one place, and the result is a natural paradise that you won’t soon forget.

With all this in mind, what better place to getaway to than Costa Rica? I’m sure we could all use a little Eco-therapy right about now. Whether it be an adventure-filled vacation, a relaxing villa stay or just some tropical R&R, you are sure to go home feeling refreshed and renewed.  So, once the time is right for travel again, Costa Rica and it’s natural healing powers will be waiting to embrace you.

An Update from Villa Perezoso about COVID-19 in Costa Rica

March 31, 2020

Without question, we have entered into unchartered waters, and each of us is scrambling to address an ever-growing health crisis while also attending to our finances, our families, our personal life and attempting to evaluate what the future holds.  While the latter is impossible, here at Villa Perezoso we are weathering the storm and making use of the time.  We have taken proactive steps to join together with the local tourism industry to implement changes for when the time comes to once again welcome travelers to our tropical oasis.  At Villa Perezoso, we have a dedicated team with whom we have implemented new cleaning and sanitation protocols, new guest service interaction rules and new protocols for the maintenance of all internal and external areas.  As we move through this crisis, guest comfort and safety will continue to be our #1 priority.

According to the ICT, Costa Rica’s tourism board, over 3 million tourists visit our peaceful and beautiful country every year and 30% of the Costa Rican work force comes from tourism, with more than 80% of the tourism sector related to boutique establishments and family-owned businesses, like our very own Villa Perezoso.  With numbers like these, it is easy to understand why tourism is the heart of our community and why the COVID-19 health crisis has affected everyone so severely.

As of March 18th, Costa Rica’s democratic government, made the decision to close its borders to in-coming tourists.  This decision was difficult for our tourism-based country to swallow, but it was a decision that was fully supported by everyone, both business owners and local citizens alike, who know that this immediate sacrifice will produce future benefits.  With the excellent leadership of our health minister, a doctor and a master in public health and epidemiology, in conjunction with the unified spirit of all Costa Ricans, who want nothing more than to be able to welcome back tourists, we have been on a stay-at-home call to action for 2 weeks now. To date we have just under 350 cases and no reported cases in our beloved Manuel Antonio.  While we know the numbers are bound to change with time, we feel confident we are staying ahead of the curve and doing our best to keep the numbers low.  Our entire community is working together for the future health and prosperity of our tourism-based businesses and for the health and safety of our families.

As we wait to turn the corner, we relish on the simple things; abounding nature, tropical fruits, warm weather, sunshine and most of all, family.  When things calm down, and we know they will, we will be waiting with open doors at Villa Perezoso to welcome you back.  With its rich nature and focus on tranquility, no doubt Costa Rica will offer a safe, private and much-needed escape.

From our family to yours, we wish you continued health and peace during this time.
