Costa Rica Celebrates Independence Day

September 16, 2020

September 15, 2020 celebrated 199 years of Costa Rica’s independence. This was a joyous day across the country and for Costa Ricans all over the world, as this day symbolizes freedom, democracy and a culture of peace.  This day is celebrated with several popular traditions, and this year was no exception.  Here is a look at a few of these traditions and their important meaning to Costa Rica:

“Faroles” Parade

“Faroles” or lanterns are lit up on the eve of September 14th, the day before Independence Day as a symbol of freedom.  This tradition dates back to the year 1821, when at 6pm Costa Rica’s Independence Act was signed, giving them autonomy.  On this day many years ago, Costa Ricans lit lanterns and joined together to sign the National Anthem to celebrate.  Since then, this has become a tradition that school children, families, government offices and homes across the country all observe.  Beautiful and elaborate lanterns are often part of children’s homework the week working up to Independence Day, and these are usually boasted at parades that are held in each town.  The night of the lanterns is a huge Costa Rican tradition and party.  This year it was celebrated virtually.

The National Anthem and the Costa Rican Flag

The lyrics to Costa Rica’s National Anthem are always sung in the homes of Costa Ricans. The National Anthem is not a war song; rather, it tells the story of a democratic people, of farmers who have not experienced great conflicts and of a peaceful nation.  The national flag faithfully expresses the life of Costa Rica, characterized by always seeking conciliation, as well as by the virtuous purpose that guides its destiny.  Mini Costa Rican flags are proudly adorned in homes and in people’s car the weeks leading up to the holiday, and towns are all festively decorated with large flags on lamp posts and traffic lights. It’s a lovely sight to see!

Long Weekends to the Beach

No Independence Day in Costa Rica would be complete without a visit to the beach, and this year was no exception. In spite of Covid and its restrictions, families all loaded into their cars and took road trips to nearby beaches.  Social distancing and remaining in bubbles was enforced, but this certainly didn’t take away from the fun of being gathered at the beach, having BBQ’s, playing soccer and soaking up the sunshine and fresh air.  Our very own Manuel Antonio National Park and beaches were very busy this past weekend and we were thrilled to receive responsible visitors from all over the country!

All of us at Villa Perezoso have a great love for Costa Rica, and are proud to reside here and be able to share this wonderful piece of paradise with our guests.  This is a country that promotes peace and honors family and relationships in a way that we should all take note.  We look forward to sharing the beauty of Costa Rica and its wonderful people with you soon. We are happy to announce that the following US States are now allowed in to Costa RicaNew York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Maine, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Michigan, Rhode Island, Wyoming, Arizona and New Mexico.  Starting on October 1st, California residents will also be allowed to visit. Additional states will also be added at that time. If you would like to visit, please contact us, and we will be happy to help you plan your next visit…

Happy 199 years of independence, Costa Rica!

An Update from Villa Perezoso about COVID-19 in Costa Rica

March 31, 2020

Without question, we have entered into unchartered waters, and each of us is scrambling to address an ever-growing health crisis while also attending to our finances, our families, our personal life and attempting to evaluate what the future holds.  While the latter is impossible, here at Villa Perezoso we are weathering the storm and making use of the time.  We have taken proactive steps to join together with the local tourism industry to implement changes for when the time comes to once again welcome travelers to our tropical oasis.  At Villa Perezoso, we have a dedicated team with whom we have implemented new cleaning and sanitation protocols, new guest service interaction rules and new protocols for the maintenance of all internal and external areas.  As we move through this crisis, guest comfort and safety will continue to be our #1 priority.

According to the ICT, Costa Rica’s tourism board, over 3 million tourists visit our peaceful and beautiful country every year and 30% of the Costa Rican work force comes from tourism, with more than 80% of the tourism sector related to boutique establishments and family-owned businesses, like our very own Villa Perezoso.  With numbers like these, it is easy to understand why tourism is the heart of our community and why the COVID-19 health crisis has affected everyone so severely.

As of March 18th, Costa Rica’s democratic government, made the decision to close its borders to in-coming tourists.  This decision was difficult for our tourism-based country to swallow, but it was a decision that was fully supported by everyone, both business owners and local citizens alike, who know that this immediate sacrifice will produce future benefits.  With the excellent leadership of our health minister, a doctor and a master in public health and epidemiology, in conjunction with the unified spirit of all Costa Ricans, who want nothing more than to be able to welcome back tourists, we have been on a stay-at-home call to action for 2 weeks now. To date we have just under 350 cases and no reported cases in our beloved Manuel Antonio.  While we know the numbers are bound to change with time, we feel confident we are staying ahead of the curve and doing our best to keep the numbers low.  Our entire community is working together for the future health and prosperity of our tourism-based businesses and for the health and safety of our families.

As we wait to turn the corner, we relish on the simple things; abounding nature, tropical fruits, warm weather, sunshine and most of all, family.  When things calm down, and we know they will, we will be waiting with open doors at Villa Perezoso to welcome you back.  With its rich nature and focus on tranquility, no doubt Costa Rica will offer a safe, private and much-needed escape.

From our family to yours, we wish you continued health and peace during this time.
